THEME DEVELOPMENT!
WHAT ARE WE LEARNING: Theme Development!
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT: A theme is a central idea or concept that sets the tone for telling the story of the year. Repeated throughout the yearbook on cover and endsheets and in opening, closing and dividers, it unifies the storytelling message of the book and gives it personality.
Students: "I will be able to develop and present a complete yearbook theme by combining a strong concept with consistent visual elements, including colors, fonts, graphics, cover ideas, and page designs that can be carried throughout the entire yearbook."
HOW WILL MY TEACHER KNOW WHAT I LEARNED: Today we will research previous publications and brainstorm on ideas for THIS school year's yearbook theme!
Presentations (& Critiquing)!
Critiquing!
Critiquing is the act of carefully reviewing, analyzing, and evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of a work, idea, or performance rather than simply attacking or dismissing it.
This is NOT a popularity contest! A theme that looks amazing on a cover might not work for 200+ pages.
MAKE IT CONSTRUCTIVE
"Construct" means "to build." Even when you are pointing out an area for improvement, your criticism should help to build your peer's ability to create a successful project.
Positive comments are also appropriate. Tell a peer what he or she did well and encourage him or her to do more of that!
BE KIND, YET HONEST
Never tear down a peer, but don't hesitate to point out items that don't make sense and other mistakes. Telling a peer "It's fine" when it is not fine does not help!
GIVE EVERY PROJECT YOU ARE VIEWING YOUR FOCUS AND ATTENTION!
Come to class prepared to view and think analytically about your peers' projects. Remember, your peers are going to give their attention to your project, so it's only fair that you return the favor.
EVERYONE HAS SOMETHING TO OFFER!
Don't be intimidated if you feel that you're being asked to comment on a 'better' project. We all comment on projects all the time (to ourselves and sometimes to others!
