WHAT ARE WE LEARNING: How to build a productive and successful Yearbook!
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT: A well-organized yearbook foundation is key in building a yearbook. Planning from the beginning will help us work as a team and most importantly be successful!
HOW WILL MY TEACHER KNOW WHAT I LEARNED: Today we will discuss as a TEAM how to proceed in various part of planning our yearbook. Each student will have buy-in on its development!
We need a few things first!
Everything will be specific in our yearbook!
Go to the ONE DRIVE folder you have been culling photos from!
Find the folder PRACTICE LAYOUT 1 folder
Double click to OPEN IT!
Select (DO NOT OPEN) PRACTICE LAYOUT FAVORITES
Click the download button at the top!
NOTE!
When it comes time to work on YOUR actual layout, you will be downloading YOUR FAVORITES folder from OneDrive!
Unzipping the folder!
ZIP files contain one or more files compressed with ZIP compression.
RIGHT click the
OneDrive_2025 ZIP folder
Select EXTRACT ALL
Click EXTRACT
Go to the NEW folder
Right Click and Choose RENAME
Rename the folder PRACTICE 1
NOTE: When you are working on YOUR actual spread, you will rename the FAVORITES folder that you download with your Spread Name!
Example: JV Football
LAYOUT 1...
For us to practice on!
Go back to the ONE DRIVE folder> PRACTICE LAYOUT 1!
Select (look for the check mark) the icon for
25-26 Layout Student Trial
Select Download
(It should download into your Yearbook folder!)
FONTS...
A few for now!
Go back to the ONE DRIVE folder> PRACTICE LAYOUT 1!
Double click to OPEN the 25-26 Fonts folder
Select each font INDIVIDUALLY and click Download
They should download into your YEARBOOK FOLDER
You will download 3 fonts!

StreuselKuchen-Regular
Double click the font that downloaded!
Click INSTALL after the font is downloaded!
Double click the EACH FONT file... Click INSTALL on the top left!
Open InDesign
We need to make (check) a preferences change!
Also! Make sure you are on Essentials Classic!
Click the WINDOW tab...
WORKSPACE>ESSENTIALS CLASSIC
Click the EDIT tab
Select PREFERENCES>
FILE HANDLING
Check the box under FONTS:
AUTO ACTIVATE ADOBE FONTS
Click OK
Then to see the entire spread, choose VIEW (tab on top)> FIT SPREAD IN WINDOW
NOTE the SHORTCUT!
Let's try to save to Creative Cloud!
Here are some benefits of using InDesign cloud documents:

Select FILE>SAVE AS
Select
SAVE TO CREATIVE CLOUD
Create a new folder
Click NEW FOLDER
Name the folder YEARBOOK
Click SAVE
Next to SAVE AS...
RENAME THE FILE!
Your First Initial Last Initial PRACTICE 1
Example: TE Practice 1
Then click SAVE on the bottom right corner to save it to Creative Cloud
Then click OK
This is telling us we have links to our document that are on our Hard Drive...this is OK
Now you should see a cloud icon and a suffix .inddc
The file should now auto save and will be save to Creative cloud.
Layers...
On the right you should see your properties panel...
Click on the Layers panel
All of the layers are LOCKED
To UNLOCK a layer, click on the little pad lock next to the name.
UNLOCK the Text layer ONLY!
It is good practice to keep layers locked when you are not specifically working on them!
Remember to lock the layer after you are done working on it!
Adding TEXT etc!
Select the Selection tool from the Tool panel
Select the MAIN HEADLINE
On your layout, select the
Main Headline
Double click it to activate the Text Tool
(TIP: You can triple click the text to selct it all)
Replace the Text with:
IN THE ZONE!
Select the Selection Tool (Black Arrow) to move the text as necessary!
Select the SubHEADLINE
Now, under the Headline, select the SubHeadline
Double click it to activate the Text Tool
(TIP: You can triple click the text to selct it all)
Replace the Text with:
VARSITY FOOTBALL BRINGS THE HEAT.
Select the Body Copy
Now, change the body copy (above the Headline)
Double click it to activate the Text Tool
(TIP: You can triple click the text to select it all)
Replace the Text with:

Select the Second Body Copy
Now, change the second body copy (below the Headline)
Double click it to activate the Text Tool
(TIP: You can triple click the text to select it all)
Replace the Text with:
Varsity Pates commitment on and off the field made this season one to remember and set the standard for future Patriot football.
Select the Roster under the main Photo
Now, Change the Roster
Double click it to activate the Text Tool
(TIP: You can triple click the text to select it all)
Replace the Text with:

Now, Change the Captions under the Photos!
Double click it to activate the Text Tool
(TIP: You can triple click the text to select it all)
Replace each caption with opne of the following:
Marcus Johnson breaks through the line.
Ethan Ramirez looks for an open receiver.
Jalen Brooks powers forward for extra yards.
Tyler Nguyen makes the catch on the sideline.
Malik Robinson wraps up the tackle.
Lucas Martinez sprints toward the end zone.
Jordan Lee blocks to open the lane.
Remember! You might have to adjust the text frame to fit the text...
Select the Selection Tool (Black Arrow) to move the text is necessary!
Adding Photos etc!
UNLOCK the PHOTOS Layer!
Shortcut to PLACE is Ctrl + D
Select one of the IMAGE Frames (the GREEN boxes)
Select FILE>Place or Ctrl + D
Go to your Yearbook Folder> Practice Layout 1 Folder
Click on an image you would like to place in the box and click OPEN!
NOW! Place an image in each place holder!
To change the view of a folder, on the top right, click the "Change Your View" pull down and select EXTRA LARGE ICONS
If the photo does not fit...
Click the OBJECT tab>FITTING>Fill Frame Proportionately
To adjust the image:
Hover over the image until you see a double circle/donut in the center of the image...this is the Content Grabber.
Click on the center circle (Content Grabber) to engage the content grabber and move image into desired position!
Place the TEAM PHOTO in the PINK Box!
Adding Doodles etc!
UNLOCK the DOODLES Layer!
Select the Rectangular Frame Tool
(the box with an X in it!) from the Tools Panel!
Shortcut to PLACE is Ctrl + D
Draw a box somwhere on the page (simply click and pull)
Shortcut to PLACE is Ctrl + D
Go to FILE> Place
Shortcut to PLACE is Ctrl + D
Select either the Football Play Doodle or Football Doodle
Click OPEN
This will place the Doodle!
Then click OK
This is telling us we have links to our document that are on our Hard Drive...this is OK
If the photo does not fit...
Click the OBJECT tab>FITTING>Fill Frame Proportionately
Let's Export what you have...
No matter how far you are in the process!
After saving your file,
Select the FILE tab>Export
Export to your Practice 1 folder
Save as Type: Adobe PDF (PRINT)
For the Preset:
PDF/X-1a:2001
All Pages
Click SPREADS
Click EXPORT
Go to our Classroom in TEAMS
Select Assignments
Select
Yearbook: PRACTICE LAYOUT!
Scroll down to MY WORK
Click +ATTACH
Click UPLOAD FROM THIS DEVICE
Select DESKTOP (on the left) then the YEARBOOK Folder>Practice 1 Folder
Find the PDF file we just exported and select it:
It should be in your YEARBOOK>Practice 1 folder!
Example:
TE Practice 1.pdf
Click OPEN
Wait for file to upload
File will show up below under My Work
CLICK TURN IN!
NOTE: There MUST be a PDF file attached to get credit AND MUST have images properly placed! Simply clicking TURN IN will not do!!!
TOTAL: 50 POINTS!!!
Add Photos
Add text
Add Doodle
Export as a PDF SPREAD
Name file Correctly!
Ctrl+Alt+Delete then select SIGN OFF!
Please place HEADPHONES on your Monitors!
