WHAT ARE WE LEARNING: Double Exposure
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT: Learning double exposure in Photoshop is a powerful way for high school students to master core digital editing skills like blending modes, layer masks, and selections. It bridges historical analog photography techniques with modern digital tools, fostering deep artistic vision.
HOW WILL MY TEACHER KNOW WHAT I LEARNED: You will follow along with instruction and use what we have learned to create amazingly photos!
This will save the file to your Yearbook or Downloads folder!
Shortcut: Shift + Ctrl + S
(or File: SAVE AS)
Save to CREATIVE CLOUD!
Click the Save to CREATIVE CLOUD button
Name the document:
"First Initial Last Initial Double"
(Example: TE DOUBLE)
Click SAVE TO CLOUD DOCUMENTS
Let's Begin!
Take a look at the LAYERS Panel on the bottom right of your screen!
How many layers are there?
NOTICE! (This is important for later!)
One file is a portrait with a simple background.
One file is more an interest photo...a landscape or in this case a Beach scene.
Click the empty box to the left of the BEACH layer thumbnail to make that layer visible
With the Beach Layer still selected, click the Blending Mode menu (currently set to Normal) on the Layers Panel
Select SCREEN
Drag the layer Opacity slider to about 85%
Select the MOVE Tool (the 4 arrows in the Tool bar)
Drag the Beach photo to the left or right until you are happy with the blended image.
With the Beach Layer still selected
Click the Add Layer Mask Icon (the rectangle with the circle in the center) at the bottom of the Layers panel to add a layer mask to the BEACH Layer
Select the Brush Tool
Select the BRUSH tool
Once selected, your options at the top will change...
Open the Brush Preset picker (the folder icon with the brush) and select the SOFT ROUND BRUSH from the General folder.
TIP: hover over each brush to see what type of brush it is!
Set the Size slider to about 400 px.
Switch the foreground to BLACK by clicking the small arrows or press X on your keyboard
Set the default colors...
At the bottom of the Tool Bar, click the small white and black squares to set the default colors.
Click the small double arrow icon near the color swatches to switch the colors and set BLACK as the foreground color for the Brush tool.
Here WHITE is the foreground and BLACK is the background...
If Black is not the foreground color, click the two sided curved are to switch them!
Make sure BLACK is in the foreground!
On the Toolbar towards the bottom look for the large black and white boxes. The one on TOP is the foreground color.
To Reveal on a layer mask,
WHITE = Reveals
BLACK = Conseals
If white is not the foreground color, click the two sided curved are to switch them!
When the Layer mask is selected, you can see a white keyline around it
With the BEACH layer still selected, make sure you have the MASK selected
As you brush away the areas you should see your mask in the Layers panel change!
Brush around the OUTSIDE of the figure to hide any areas where detail from the beach image is visible on the light background of the portrait.

Paint with BLACK on the layer mask any areas of the portrait where you want to reveal more detail, such as the figures face, hair or jawline.
No SIGNATURE required!
EXPORTING Your FILE
Please make sure it is a JPG file!
Save the JPG file in your Yearbook folder on your desktop!
File Name: First Initial Last Initial Double
Save as type: JPG (*jpg)
Click SAVE
Go to our Classroom in TEAMS
Select Assignments
Select
Adobe Photoshop: Double Exposure in Photoshop!
Scroll down to MY WORK
Click +ATTACH
Click UPLOAD FROM THIS DEVICE
Select DESKTOP (on the left) then the YEARBOOK Folder
Find the JPG file we EXPORTED and select it (it should be called First Initial Last Initial DOUBLE.jpg)
Click OPEN
Wait for file to upload
File will show up below under My Work
CLICK TURN IN!
NOTE: There MUST be a JPG file attached to get credit. Simply clicking TURN IN will not do!!!
TOTAL: 25 POINTS!!!

Ctrl+Alt+Delete then select SIGN OFF!
