WHAT ARE WE LEARNING: Proofing 101!
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT: To proof a yearbook, thoroughly review each page for accuracy in names, spellings, dates, captions, and content, checking for grammatical errors, image quality, layout consistency, and overall design flow, ideally with multiple people reviewing to catch any missed mistakes; ensure all important elements like faces and text fall within the proper margins and bleed areas, and consider getting feedback from others with fresh eyes before finalizing the book.
HOW WILL MY TEACHER KNOW WHAT I LEARNED: Today we will begin proofing our Semester 1 layouts!
TODAY WE WILL BE PROOFING LAYOUT2!
Each of you will be given another student's spread!
Things to look for:
Duplicate photos
Heads cut off
Not our student in photo
Typos
ANYTHING that looks odd
This is NOTHING personal!
TAKE YOUR TIME!
Look it over with a critical AND creative eye!
Proofreading your yearbook isn’t something that you should rush. Make sure you are taking your time to read through the content.
Check headlines, captions, content, snippets, quotes, etc. And make sure that names are spelled correctly underneath the portraits! There is nothing worse than having a student’s name misspelled or wrong.
BREAK UP THE PROCESS!
Start with only looking for misspellings.
Go back and reread the content, this time looking for punctuation issues.
On the third pass, look for grammatical errors.
Look closely at the photos...
Review Photo Placement etc
Start your review by examining the photo placement (on every page of your book.) Don’t read any copy, don’t analyze what’s within each image.
Just critique how each image appears on the page as you pass by each one. If the alignment, picture size or overall placement of the photo next to the copy on the page looks strange, make a note to adjust.
The trick to this step is to not get bogged down in the details, but instead focus on the overall layout of your images in each spread.
DO NOT UPDATE LAYOUT 2
You can make changes AFTER proofing (tomorrow)!
