WHAT ARE WE LEARNING: About OUR Digital Cameras (Canon R50)
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT: Clearly understanding your camera's functions is essential for capturing high-quality images and maximizing your creative potential. We will explore some of the critical functions commonly found in the Canon R50 Mirrorless camera and how they can be used to enhance your photography.
HOW WILL MY TEACHER KNOW WHAT I LEARNED: You will follow along with instruction and use what we have learned to handle the camera properly!
Do NOT remove a lens. If a lens change is needed please ask!

Door for Battery/SD card located on bottom of camera...
Memory card goes in as shown...
Push (gently) to click into place
Close and lock battery/SD card door...Pull tab to left to Lock!
Install your Memory card (SD Card)!
Door is located on the BOTTOM of the camera (with the battery)
R50 has ONE card slot
Click the lever to open the door
Insert the card in to slot with the label facing the front of the camera (lens side).
Push (gently) until Memory card clicks in place
Close and Lock door! (door does NOT auto lock!)

18-45 mm lens
Lens is collapsed...
Rotate lens to expand...
NOTE!
When you go to use the lens, you have to OPEN it up (it is collapsed)
Remove lens cap (Pinch sides to remove)
Lens begins in a collapsed state
Rotate lens and it will expand
Lens at 18 mm...
Rotate lens to set to 45mm etc...

Lens is manual
Must be physically set in order to zoom
(not Power zoom)
18 mm will be a wider angle (you will see more in the scene)
45 mm is zoomed in closer (tighter crop)
REMEMBER!
Please turn the lens to collapse before turning it back in!

Push the ON/OFF lever to ON
Remember to turn OFF before removing SD card!

Now let's go over what YOU need to use!
Located on the top right...
SHUTTER BUTTON
The shutter button has two steps. You can press the shutter button halfway. Then you can further press the shutter button completely.
Push fully to take your shot!
PRESSING HALFWAY
This activates autofocusing and the automatic exposure system that sets the shutter speed and aperture value.
The exposure value (shutter speed and aperture value) is displayed on the screen or in the viewfinder for 8 sec. (metering timer/Timer 8 sec.).
PRESSING COMPLETELY
This releases the shutter and takes the picture.
The camera will still pause before taking a picture if you press the shutter button completely without pressing it halfway first, or if you press the shutter button halfway and immediately press it completely.
Even during menu display or image playback, you can return to shooting standby by pressing the shutter button halfway.
Video Record Button
This is to shoot Video
We will NOT be doing video in this class!
What are MODES?
MODE DIAL: Currently set to Manual (M)
MODE DIAL!
Located on the TOP of the camera
For changing the MODE you camera will shoot in
M = Manual Photo
Av = Aperture Priority
Tv= Shutter Priority
P = Program
A = Automatic
Digital camera modes can be defined as camera controls that photographers have to choose before shooting a subject.
M = Manual Photo
You set the ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed
AV = Aperture Priority
You choose the aperture and the camera sets the shutter speed.
TV= Shutter Priority
You choose the shutter speed and the camera sets the aperture.
P = Program
The camera automatically selects the shutter speed and aperture.
A = Automatic
The camera automatically sets all the settings
Set your camera to M! (for now!)
Set your ISO first!
Located on the top right, next to shutter button...

Push to change your ISO (sensitivity of your sensor)
Remember to set it to you BASE ISO (100) first!

The screen is a touch screen
You can use your finger to slide the ISO to the base ISO: 100
OR you can use the dial on the top of the camera!

At the bottom, you can see SHUTTER (1/125) and APERTURE (F6.3)
NOTE: when you see the YELLOW dial by either that is the one selected!

With the SHUTTER DIAL, depending on which way you rotate the shutter will go up or down
Or tap the screen (it is a touch screen) to adjust the shutter speed!
Pressing UP button on Cross Keys...
Press the UP on the Cross Keys to toggle to Aperture (f- stop)
Note: the YELLOW dial icon moves to Aperture/f-stop setting
Again you can use the dial on top to change the aperture
Or tap the screen (it is a touch screen) to adjust the aperture!
Press the Q button on the LCD screen or press the Q/SET button in the cross keys!

There are many things we can change on the screen (remember it is a touch screen!
Auto Focus Area:
How much of your camera is able to see with your auto focus
Spot: only that little box will have it in focus. Good for Portraits.
Whole Area Auto Focus: Camera will determine what needs to be in focus.
Good for Landscapes
Auto Focus Operation:
ONE SHOT
Will give you focus in one area but will alos NOT change auto focus
AI SHOT
Camera will figure out what auto focus mode it needs to be in
SERVO AF
Important!
If you are shooting something that is always moving around, leave it in Servo and the camera will always be tracking the moving subject.
Subject Detection
Detects different subjects automatically!
Camera will ignore other objects to focus on
Photo Quality
On the back
If you click the L icon
You will see a bunch of options
These are for JPG
We will shoot in Large JPG (fine quality)
TURN CAMERA OFF!
Push the ON/OFF lever to OFF
Remember to turn OFF before removing SD card!
Memory card goes in as shown...
Close and lock battery/SD card door...Pull tab to left to Lock!

Push (gently) down on the Memory card and it will pop up

Close and Lock door! (door does NOT auto lock!)
Ctrl+Alt+Delete then select SIGN OFF!
